Smoking kills. There are no two ways to this fact. More and more proof is being unearthed everyday which relate smoking to various cancers, like mouth cancer and lung cancer. Studies have shown that non-smokers live at least ten years more compared to smokers. Though medical scientists have yet to find a direct connection between smoking and these illnesses, it is always better to stop smoking than wait for the truth to come out.

Seeing others in the same condition as the smoker is will definitely make the smoker think twice before lighting up another. There are also some stop-smoking programs which creates such groups.




Smoking is inadvertently related with other addictive substances, like coffee and alcohol. Which smoker will not agree that coffee and alcohol are great companions to a post lunch or post dinner smoke? Other foods that can stimulate a smoker's desire to smoke are fatty food.
Therefore, cutting down on these foods and beverages can help a person in quitting smoking.One of the good tips to quit smoking is to keep some chewing gum always at hand. Many smokers are not addicted to the cigarette per sé, but are more dependent on the cigarette to keep their hands busy. This can be easily cured by eating chewing gum, playing with toothpicks or even keeping something like a stress ball in hand.

Smoking has been idolized by the media and others. Most cigarette ads will hint at the masculinity and success of the smoker. One should remember that the first person to have a roaring success of an advertisement campaign for a international cigarette brand died of lung cancer. However, it is a good idea to keep all the ashtrays out of sight and destroy any other paraphernalia related to cigarettes when the person decides to quit smoking. These accessories can only remind the smoker of cigarettes and may act as bane in their mission to quit smoking.

Quitting smoking is a big exercise, and a big exercise requires one to measure and gauge their quit smoking stages and progress almost everyday. Therefore, smokers should take benefit of the various quit-smoking tools available.

Smokers face massive withdrawal symptoms during and after they have quit smoking. There are various  quit-smoking aids  which help the smoker overcome these withdrawal symptoms.One quit-smoking aid are the Nicotine Replacement therapies. These provide a small dose of nicotine that help ease the withdrawal symptoms smokers face while they are quitting smoking. These aids are available as nicotine gum, nicotine patches, nicotine patches and even nicotine inhalers.

Some other  quit-smoking aids  are in the form of pills or syrups. One common quit smoking nicotine aids is Bupropion hydrochloride. It is marketed under the name Zyban, Wellbutrin XL and Wellbutrin SR. These work well against the withdrawal symptoms of smokers trying to quit smoking. Varenicline Tartrate has been discovered by Pfizer. It is marketed under the name Chantix. This drug impedes the smoking satisfaction in smokers.

Hypnosis is also considered as a way to quit smoking. It puts people in a state of mind where the mind does not believe in smoking or the satisfaction gained by smoking. However, hypnosis is a highly debatable concept and one should be careful before going in for anything like this.
